Is Creative Writers Right for Your Child?
This Course Is Ideal For:
  • Ages 8-12 at varied writing skill levels
  • Reluctant or struggling writers
  • Students with great ideas but can't get them on paper
  • Children who avoid writing assignments
  • Students who love stories but hate "writing"
  • Needs grammar skills in engaging context
  • Preparing for future essay writing (without pressure yet)
  • Students with dyslexia, ADHD, dysgraphia, or writing anxiety
⚠️ This May Not Be the Best Fit If:
  • Primarily needs reading support, not writing (try Learning Readers or Growing Readers)
  • Already a confident, advanced writer seeking critique
  • Only wants essay instruction (we build toward essays but don't write them yet)
  • Has severe fine motor challenges making writing/typing impossible (contact us—accommodations possible)

💡 Not sure? Don't worry! After you enroll, our placement assessment will confirm this is the right course and determine which of the 4 levels your child should start with — or recommend a different course entirely at no extra cost.
This Course Has 4 Progressive Levels
Each level is a separate 12-week session. Students progress from level to level as writing skills develop.
Creative Writers is designed as a 4-level progression that systematically builds writing confidence and craft over time. You enroll in one level at a time, and our placement assessment determines which level your child should start with.
1
Level 1: Foundation
Introduces basic story structure, descriptive language, and builds writing confidence. Perfect for beginners or very reluctant writers.
Duration: 12 weeks
2
Level 2: Building
Builds on Level 1 with character development, dialogue, and more complex story elements. Expands sentence variety and grammar skills.
Duration: 12 weeks
3
Level 3: Expanding
Expands craft with plot development, revision strategies, and voice. Students write longer, more polished pieces.
Duration: 12 weeks
4
Level 4: Mastery
Solidifies all writing skills with advanced techniques. Students complete polished narrative pieces and prepare for essay writing.
Duration: 12 weeks

Important: You don't need to complete all 4 levels. Our assessment places your child at the right starting level, and they progress as far as needed. Some students complete all 4 levels, others build confidence in fewer.
What Students Master Across the 4 Levels
From reluctant writer to confident storyteller
Across the 4 levels of Creative Writing, students develop essential writing skills while discovering that writing can be joyful, not just a chore. We use creativity and storytelling to teach the mechanics — making learning engaging and effective.
Master Storytelling
Students learn story structure, character development, dialogue, descriptive language, and plot — building blocks of all good writing. Each level deepens these craft elements with increasingly sophisticated techniques.
Learn Grammar Through Writing
Grammar is taught in the context of students' own writing — not through boring worksheets. Each level introduces new grammar concepts and applies them in creative projects, making learning meaningful.
Understand the Process
Students learn that writing is messy brainstorming → rough drafting → playful revision. This process removes perfectionism and anxiety. Each level builds comfort with all stages of writing.
By completing the levels appropriate for their needs, students achieve:
  • Confidence in their writing abilities
  • Strong foundational writing skills
  • Ability to organize thoughts and express ideas clearly
  • Understanding that writing can be enjoyable
  • Readiness for future academic writing
Our Teaching Approach Across All Levels
01
Creativity First, Mechanics Second
We start with imagination and storytelling. Grammar and mechanics are taught in service of students' creative ideas — not as boring rules to memorize first.
02
Low-Pressure, High-Support
First drafts are supposed to be messy. We celebrate mistakes, encourage experimentation, and remove the pressure to be perfect. This builds confidence across all levels.
03
Writing as Process
Students learn that all writers brainstorm, draft, revise, and edit. This removes the, "I'm not a good writer," belief and shows writing as learnable skills practiced at every level.
04
Meta-Learning Integration
Students discover HOW they write best: Are you a planner or explorer? Do you think better talking first? What helps when you're stuck? This awareness grows with each level.

Expected Outcomes
What families typically see after each 12-week level
✍️ Writing Confidence
Students move from "I hate writing" to willingly writing — often voluntarily creating stories at home after completing a level or two.
📝 Skill Development
Measurable improvement in organization, sentence structure, descriptive language, and grammar application with each level completed.
💭 Ideas to Paper
Students develop the ability to get ideas from their head onto paper — the bridge many struggling writers need, strengthened across all levels.
🎨 Creative Expression
Writing becomes a tool for self-expression rather than just a school requirement. Students find their voice with each level.

Important Note:
Progress varies by student. Some move through levels quickly, others take more time. What matters is that writing becomes less painful and more enjoyable — skills follow confidence.
What Parents Are Saying About This Course

Parent of 11-year-old with ADHD and anxiety
Creative Writing - Levels 1, 2 & 3

Course-Specific Questions
Which level should my child start with?
Answer: Our placement assessment determines this! After you enroll, your child completes a brief assessment and we place them in the appropriate level (1, 2, 3, or 4) based on their current writing skills. You don't need to guess—we'll ensure perfect placement.

Does my child need to be able to write by hand, or can they type?
Answer: Either! Students can type OR handwrite—whatever works best for their brain. Many students with dysgraphia, fine motor challenges, or ADHD do better typing, and that's perfectly fine. The goal is getting ideas out.

How much writing do they have to do?
Answer: During class: 15-20 minutes of focused writing time. Between classes: Optional continuation of projects (10-20 min). We keep volume manageable—quality over quantity. The focus is on building confidence, not producing massive amounts of writing.

What if my child has great ideas but struggles to get them on paper?
Answer: This is exactly who this course is for! We teach strategies to bridge that gap: talking ideas out first, drawing storyboards, dictating to a parent, using graphic organizers. Each level builds this skill progressively.

Will this help with school essay writing?
Answer: Yes—but indirectly. We're building the foundational skills essays require (organizing thoughts, writing clear sentences, grammar, revision) through creative projects first. Once students are confident writers, essay structure becomes much easier. Many families use Levels 1-2 for confidence, then Levels 3-4 prepare for essay writing.

Can my child take both Confident Readers and Creative Writing?
Answer: Yes! Many students do. The courses complement each other—reading and writing skills reinforce one another. We'll help you manage scheduling and workload to ensure it's not overwhelming.

What if my child only wants to write about one topic (video games, dinosaurs, etc.)?
Answer: Great! We START with what they love. Once they're engaged and confident, we gently expand to new topics. But even if they write about the same topic all 12 weeks, they're still learning structure, description, dialogue, revision—all transferable skills.

What comes after Level 4?
Answer: After completing all 4 levels of Creative Writing, students have strong foundational writing skills and are typically ready for more academic writing instruction (which we may offer in the future). We'll provide clear recommendations based on your child's progress and goals.
